Từ vựng tiếng Anh 11: Các thành ngữ phổ biến

Trong tiếng Anh, có nhiều cụm từ và thành ngữ mang một ý nghĩa nhất định nào đó. Trong bài học từ vựng tiếng Anh 11 này, chúng ta sẽ học cách sử dụng các cụm từ và thành ngữ xuất hiện trong chương trình tiếng Anh 11 căn bản.

Các thành ngữ phổ biến

These English idioms are used quite regularly in the United States. You may not hear them every day, but they will be very familiar to any native English speaker.

1. – be no concern
   – be no business of somebody’s
   – be none of somebody’s business
   = Không liên quan dính liếu tới mộ ai đó, ai đó không có quyền biết điều gì.
   Ví dụ:
   – It’s no business of yours how much I earn a month. (Tôi kiếm được bao nhiêu một tháng không liên quan gì tới anh cả.)
   – What I am doing is none of your business. ( Việc tôi đang làm gì không phải việc của anh.)
2. have no intention of doing something
   = Không có ý định làm gì đó.
   Ví dụ:
   – I have no intention of applying for a job at that company. They pay very low. (Tôi không định xin việc ở công ty đó. Lương họ trả thấp quá.)
3. be short of something
   = Thiếu hay không đủ cái gì đó
   Ví dụ:
   – I’m a bit short of money at the moment.
4. – be cut for somebody or something
   – be cut out to be something
   = có tính cách hay khả năng rất phù hợp để làm gì
   Ví dụ:
   – Why did he join the army? He’s not really cut out to be a soldier.
   – They were really good teachers. They’re truly cut out for a teaching career.
5. It comes as no surprise to somebody that
   = ai đó không hề ngạc nhiên gì về
   Ví dụ:
   – It came as no surprise to us that he failed the exam. He had never studied hard enough.
6. nowhere to be found
   = tìm đâu cũng không ra
   Ví dụ:
   They searched everywhere in the house, but the ring was nowhere to be found.
7. – be in the mood for something / doing something
   – be in the mood to do something
   = rất muốn làm điều gì
   Ví dụ:
   – She’s always in the mood of going out and having some fun with friends.
   – Don’t ask me to sing. I’m not in the mood to sing now.
8. do something with a view to something/doing something
   = với chủ ý là / nhằm mục đích là
   Ví dụ:
   – He painted and decorated the house with a view to selling it for a good price.
9. make a dash for
   = lao về phía, chạy xổ về hướng đó
   Ví dụ:
   – When seeing many strange people around, the deer made a dash for shelter.
   – We jumped into the car and made a dash for the ferry.
10. fall into disrepute: 
    = bị tai tiếng, bị mang tiếng xấu
    Ví dụ:
    – Since the scandal, the school has rather fallen into disrepute. 
11. take a risk in/by doing something
    = liều lĩnh làm việc gì đó
    Ví dụ:
    –  If you want to become rich quickly, you should take a risk by investing your money in that company.
12. take it for granted that:
    = đinh ninh rằng, khăng khăng cho rằng điều gì đó xảy ra mà không kiểm tra cho chắc
    Ví dụ:
    – He took it for granted that he would get that job, and so he was very surprised that he didn’t.
    – We took it for granted that there would be some rooms available at the hotel but we were wrong.
13. as a last resort:
    = chỗ bám víu cuối cùng
    Ví dụ:
    – Nobody wanted to lend me the money. I asked my brother-in-law as a last resort, and luckily he was able to help me.
14. on the same terms as something/somebody
    = ngang hàng, bình đẳng với…
    Ví dụ:
    – A good teacher should treat all students on the same terms.
15. give somebody/something priority over somebody/something
    = cho ai đó/cái gì quyền ưu tiên hơn ai đó/cái gì
    Ví dụ:
    – She should give her study priority over everything. Her final exam is coming very soon.
