This is a speaking lesson for the basic level. In this lesson, we help you learn how to talk about yourself with some basic personal information.

Name

Getting to know each other by asking and telling names,

Read the conversation:

1. A: Hello. I’m Pablo. What’s your name?
   B: My name’s Mika.
   A: Hello, Mika…
2. A: Hi. My name’s Linda. What’s your name?
   B: Hello. My name’s Tom.
   A: Hello, Linda…

To introduce yourself:
– My name’s ________.

To ask someone’s name:
– What’s your name?

What’s your name? My name’s Mika.

Job

In this part, we learn how to ask and tell jobs or what a person does for a living:

Common jobs:
a student
a teacher 
a doctor
a nurse

1. A: Hello. I’m Pablo. What’s your name?
   B: My name’s Mika. Nice to meet you, Pablo.
   A: Hello, Mika. Nice to meet you, too. What do you do, Pablo?
   B: I’m a student. And you? What’s your job?
   A: I’m a student, too.
2. A: Hi. My name’s Linda. What’s your name?
   B: Hello. My name’s Tom. What do you do, Linda?
   A: Hello, Linda. I’m a teacher. I teach English. And what do you do?
   B: I’m a doctor. I work in a local hospital.

Asking and Telling jobs:

Nationality

Let’s learn how to tell people which country you are from, nationality, and hometown.

Let’s read the following conversation:

A: Hello. My name’s Richard. What’s your name?
B: Kurt.
A: Where are you from, Kurt?
B: I’m from Hamburg. And Where are you from?
A: I’m from New York.

When you’re NOT in your home country, the question

Where are you from? (where do you come from?)

used to ask which country you belong to, and the answer is

I’m from + country name. (I come from + country name.)

And this is used to ask which town you are from, too, when you’re in your home country.

– Where are you from? I’m from Japan.
– Where do you come from? I come from Japan.

Address and phone number

Now let’s learn how to ask for someone’s address and phone number.

a. What’s your address? My address is 54 Pine Street, Annandale.

b. What’s your phone number? It’s 0945 684 127.
