Let’s read the following conversation:

A: Where are you from, Kurt?
B: I’m from Hamburg. And Where are you from?
A: I’m from New York.
When you’re NOT in your home country, the question
Where are you from? (where do you come from?)
used to ask which country you belong to, and the answer is
I’m from + country name. (I come from + country name.)
And this is used to ask which town you are from, too, when you’re in your home country.
– Where are you from? I’m from Japan.
– Where do you come from? I come from Japan.
