Vocabulary: family members

In these vocabulary lessons, we are going to learn the words of family members.

Let’s read the text and pay attention to the bold word.

My family? Well, I’m from an average family; my parents are both teachers. My mother teaches English and my father teaches Maths. They work at the same school. My oldest brother, John is a university student. He’s in his final year. My sister is a second-year university student. And I’m the youngest son. I’m 15 and I’m in school.

father /ˈfɑːðə(r)/: bố hay cha
a male parent of a child or an animal; a person who is acting as the father to a child.
Ex: My father is a teacher.

mother /ˈmʌðə(r)/: mẹ hay má
a female parent of a child or animal; a person who is acting as a mother to a child.
Ex: Her mother teaches English.

son /sʌn/: con trai (trong gia đình)
a person’s male child
Ex: My son is 12 years old.

daughter /ˈdɔːtə(r)/: con gái (trong gia đình)
a person’s female child
Ex: His daughter is so cute.

husband /ˈhʌzbənd/: chồng
the man that somebody is married to; a married man
Ex: Her husband works in a bank.

wife /waɪf/: vợ
the woman that somebody is married to; a married woman
Ex: My wife is a hard-working person.

cousin /ˈkʌzn/: anh (chị) em họ
a child of your aunt or uncle
Ex: My cousin is unreliable.

aunt /ɑːnt/ or /ænt/: cô (dì), thím ( mợ)
the sister of your father or mother; the wife of your uncle
Ex: My aunt is very kind.

uncle /ˈʌŋkl/: chú (cậu), dượng
the brother of your mother or father; the husband of your aunt
Ex: Her uncle is very bossy.

niece /niːs/: cháu gái (con của anh/chị của bạn)
the daughter of your brother or sister; the daughter of your husband’s or wife’s brother or sister
Ex: I have 2 nieces, they’re my sister’s children.

nephew /ˈnefjuː/: cháu trai (con của anh/chị của bạn)
the son of your brother or sister; the son of your husband’s or wife’s brother or sister.
Ex: My nephew is 3 years old now.

brother /ˈbrʌðə(r)/: anh (em) trai
a boy or man who has the same mother and father as another person
Ex: I have 2 brothers.

sister /ˈsɪstə(r)/: chị (em) gái
a girl or woman who has the same mother and father as another person
Ex: She doesn’t have any brothers or sisters.

sibling /ˈsɪblɪŋ/: anh (em) trai hay chị (em) gái.
a brother or sister
Ex: They have 2 siblings.
