In this lesson, we look at the present simple tense and how to use the present simple in different situations.

Forms – positive, negative, questions

Forms of sentences using present simple tense
I live in a village.
He works in town.
They go to work by car.
We don’t have much money.
Where do you live?
Does he work in town?

How to use present simple tense

We use the present simple tense to talk about:

1. something that’s always true.
   It’s hot in Summer here.
   We learn about the past in history.
   Water boils at 100 °C
2. a regular or repeated action.
   She gets up at 6.45 every morning.
   My brother watches TV every weekend.
3. states, with verbs such as feel, hate, know, like, look, love, prefer, think, understand, want.
   I know you’re tired. Just take a rest.
   I prefer tea to coffee.

Use of present simple in real context

In the reading text below, the subject ‘I’ is used to introduce yourself.

My name’s Kha. I’m 20 years old, from Tay Ninh. But I now live in HCMC. I study English for Tourism at HB university in District 5.

In my free time, I like to listen to English songs, for relaxing and improving and listening skills. I don’t like sports, so every day I just do some simple exercise to be healthy.

Now let’s look at the sentences that subject ‘I’ changed into “He’.

His name’s Kha. He’s 20 years old, from Tay Ninh. But he now lives in HCMC. He studies English for Tourism at HB university in District 5.

In his free time, he likes to listen to English songs, for relaxing and improving and listening skills. He doesn’t like sports, so every day he just does some simple exercise to be healthy.
